cancer2-w200-h200Another nail in cancer’s coffin has been found by researchers at Stanford University, America.

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a type of blood cancer which has a poor rate of survival. Now a key to its treatment has been found.

The cancer has on its surface a protein called CD47. This protein sends a ‘don’t kill me’ signal which fools the body’s immune system into not attacking the cancer cells. This protein is found normally on non-cancerous cells; but this type of cancer has found a way to copy it to cloak it’s own presence.

Now the cancer’s trick has been identified, research can focus on introducing antibodies which act only on the CD47 of the cancer cells. This will open them up to attack by the body’s white blood cells.

It is thought that this cancer treatment. approach could apply to other forms of cancer, including ovarian cancer..
