A chemical produced by eczematous skin has been found to provoke asthma in mice. The chemical is called thymic stromal lymphopoietin, or TSLP.
About 60% of children with allergic skin reactions go on to develop asthma. This discovery that TSLP is involved might enable the blocking of the chemical.
Hopefully this will not be by use of a drug which produces other side effects. However, the discovery enhances the understanding of the linkage between the two diseases, which is no bad thing in itself.
Indeed, it is likely that, in time, one or more herbs or foods will be identified which can help to suppress TSLP.
Further research is needed to demonstrate the same link in humans as has been shown to exist in mice.

Hi, thanks for the great information. I was not aware that their might be a direct link between eczema and asthma. I realised that eczema sufferer were more pre-disposed to other allergic conditions. Very useful information, thanks.

This is not the first time that i have bheard this. I did read somewhere some time ago that another reason that eczema can be connected to asthma is potentially due to eczema medications.
If a child has eczema, it’s body or immune system has not yet been fully developed. Most of the eczema subscription treatments contain chemicals that can potentially have some side effects.
If these types of medications are used on young children, the problems of the side effects may be greater on them than in grown ups, because they are not developed fully, and are more prone to picking up infections and ailments.
I recall reading that certain chemicals contained in some eczema treatments may weaken the childs immune system, even up to the point where it doesn’t develop to its optimum level.
It seems to make sense, but its up to you to make your own mind up
Thanks for your comment, Molly. Certainly the Chinese have long recognized the connection in their medical system.
Surely this is old news ? Anyone who knows anything about eczema knows that certain types are linked with asthma !

Hello Guru! what enticed you to post this article? It was extremely interesting, especially since I’ve was searching for opinions on this subject since last week!
Hi Mark. The same as all my posts – I thought it was cool info. Not everyone agrees… but glad you do. Pass it on
Hello, really great post. I appreciate your work!
Another victory for the wonder of wordpress!
Good discussion. And I REALLY like that you employ what you preach. That’s when you can tell a post has come together.
My 2 years old daughter had eczema since she was four months old.
I have tried many prescription creams that did not seem to work or worked for only a few days.
A friend asked me to try MeritVCO extra virgin coconut oil. Its worked miracles. I got results in a day.
There was no itching and the dry patches were gone.
I now make sure to keep a bottle in the house all the time.
I have also noticed that water and soap worsen eczema,
so when he has it, I avoid them on the patches and use the oil instead.

Natural Cures for Eczema and psoriasis using MeritVCO Virgin coconut oil
However I prefer natural treatments for eczema and use coconut oil for healing eczema or dermatitis. Unprocessed organic virgin coconut oil soothes immediately and goes to work on healing eczema, dermatitis or just about any skin condition.
Patients with eczema have skin that is very sensitive to many substances such as soap, wool, detergents, make-up, cosmetics, mascara, lipstick, nail polish, shampoos, etc. Once skin is exposed to a trigger, it releases chemicals to the surface of the skin causing the patient to itch.
To achieve control of your ski condition it does take time and energy to follow a successful skin care routine. Skin care routines can be at times time-consuming and may seem monotonous but are necessary and well worth the effort.
We know that when someone is experiencing stress they are more likely to feel itchy and then start scratching their skin. A school-age child who has poor skin control usually feels isolated from his/her peers and can develop low self-esteem.
For an attack of eczema, two conditions are necessary: a predisposition or special irritability of the skin, and a directly exciting cause. Another influence that has received increasing attention from skin specialists is that of any shock to the nervous system or prolonged mental stress or strain.
While we don’t understand all the causes of eczema, there is evidence that the following play a role in causing eczema: diet, genetics, the immune system, and abnormalities in the barrier (protective) function of the skin. We do know however that in eczema-prone people, certain things may cause a ‘flare’ or ‘flare-up’ or may ‘trigger’ an episode of eczema.
There are treatments and remedies that do work for eczema depending on what has caused it. But some types of eczema have no known cause. However usually patients can achieve excellent control and live quite comfortably.
