Orange Juice Damages Teeth

August 7th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Health Advice

fruit-orange&juiceAn American scientist, Dr Yan-Fang Ren, of the Eatsman Institute for Oral Health, New York, has warned that , and other fruit juices, damage teeth. He reports that fruit juices can reduce enamel hardness by 84%.

They made the discovery when testing the effects of tooth whiteners. They found that while teeth whiteners remove a little enamel, fruit juice stripped massively.

As long as you clean your teeth before you go to bed, you will be fine. The benefits of orange juice or most juices far outweigh these minor side effects.

Sorry Sarah – I strongly disagree. The sugar hit you get from orange juice is not much different from the one you get from a sugar-laden soda pop. Best to favour whole fruit, and low sugar fruit such as most berries. I was shocked when I read about this – but I researched it and now believe it. Eg check out this post on orange juice and diabetes. Thanks for your comment.
