Orange Juice Damages Teeth

by Rob on August 7, 2009

fruit-orange&juiceAn American scientist, Dr Yan-Fang Ren, of the Eatsman Institute for Oral Health, New York, has warned that orange juice,, and other fruit juices, damage teeth. He reports that fruit juices can reduce enamel hardness by 84%.

They made the discovery when testing the effects of tooth whiteners. They found that while teeth whiteners remove a little enamel, fruit juice stripped tooth enamel massively.

We have already seen warnings about fruit juice pumping up blood sugar – as much as drinking coke or eating sweets. Here’s another reason to keep your fruit juices to an occasional treat.

As long as you clean your teeth before you go to bed, you will be fine. The benefits of orange juice or most juices far outweigh these minor side effects.

Sorry Sarah – I strongly disagree. The sugar hit you get from orange juice is not much different from the one you get from a sugar-laden soda pop. Best to favour whole fruit, and low sugar fruit such as most berries. I was shocked when I read about this – but I researched it and now believe it. Eg check out this post on orange juice and diabetes. Thanks for your comment.

My dentist told me that if I wanted to drink fruit juice I should use a straw to minimize the contact between the juice and my teeth. All highly acidic drinks can mess with enamel, it’s best to just drink water instead. It’s healthier for you as well as better for your teeth.
