The cases of malignant melanoma – the dangerous type of skin cancer – has exceeded 10,000 in a full year.
This cancer is largely avoidable – and is caused by excessive exposure to the sun, and use of sunbeds. The ultra-violet light which the skin is exposed to in these situations damages the DNA of the skin cells, and damaged DNA is often the precursor to cancer developing.
Go in the sun, certainly – it is unhealthy not to. But keeping exposure to it moderate is the key, especially if you have light coloured skin. Dark skin has more melanin, which absorbs ultra-violet light.
