Dr. Chwan-Li (Leslie) Shen, associate professor and researcher at the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health in Texas, has been studying green tea for ten years. She is absolutely convinced of its benefits.

The benefits of green tea are thanks to a generous measure of polyphenols, which have a powerful antioxidant effect, neutralizing damaging free radicals in the body. Many studies have confirmed that people who drink the most green tea reduce their risk of developing several chronic degenerative diseases including cancer, heart and artery disease and osteoporosis.

Animal studies indicate that this is related to the ability of polyphenols to lower general inflammation in the body.

Dr Shen’s most recent work includes demonstrating that green tea combined with the Chinese exercise Tai Chi can help post-menopausal women by helping reduce their tendency to develop osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis may be helped by consuming blueberries, recent research has shown.

Research published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research has shown that rats who were fed a diet including 10% of blueberries had much greater bone mass than those who did not eat the blueberry-enriched diet.

This indicates that blueberries may be a powerful aid in helping avoid a bane of the Western world for many – osteoporosis.

The most likely mechanism is that the antioxidants present in blueberries – the polyphenols – somehow facilitate the increase in bone mass. The exact mechanism is not yet clear and will require further study.

In any case, it is a good idea to supplement your diet with blueberries, if you do not already. The powerful health benefits of blueberries has already been well established. And this is just one more benefit to add to a long list – the possible strengthening of bones and reduction of osteoporosis.

Part of the high antioxidant score is due to the spices which are naturally found in curry. About a quarter of all high antioxidant foods are spices.

Mr Bains’ meal scores 25,000 on the ORAC antioxidant scale. A typical salad measures only 5,000.

The secret of the recipe is that it is stuffed with foods such as blueberries and goji berries – as well as the usual complement of spices. As well as being antioxidant, the meal also contains powerful antivirals and antibacterials – such as garlic and onions.

The recipe for the curry looks interesting. I will be giving it a go. I like curry – and 25,000 on the ORAC scale is very impressive.
