Further evidence for the benefits of Omega 3 fats – fish oil – in reducing heart disease was uncovered earlier this year and published in a medical journal.

The Journal of the American College of Cardiology published the research. The study was carried out on 133 patients with a certain type of heart disease. They were given either 2g (2000mg) of Omega 3 fatty acids or placebo.

After 12 months all the patients were tested and it was found that those taking the Omega 3 had significantly better heart function than the group taking a placebo.

Please note that the amount of 2 g a day of Omega 3 fats is quite high compared to the amount typically taken. What you need is 2000 mg (according to this study) of the Omega 3 fats DHA and EPA.

You can find out the amounts of these two important fatty acids you are getting, by reading the label on any Omega 3 supplement. Add together the amounts of the two in one capsule, then divide this into 2000 to find out how many capsules a day you need to take to get this amount.

Personally, I take 1500 mg a day of DHA and EPA, and I need 6 capsules a day of my chosen Omega 3 supplement to get this. But 2000 mg a day may be even better!

The most painful arthritis symptom is likely to be the one that you are suffering from. It doesn’t matter so much about the pain that is affecting other sufferers. It is our own symptoms which we want to ameliorate.

Whichever is our predominant arthritis symptom, we are best off treating it with measures which benefit the whole body.

Of course, if our condition has become advanced it may be that pharmaceutical drugs are called for.

Hopefully, this is not the case for you and it is not too late for intervention simply with dietary supplements.

Fish Oil Supplements

It is a fact that high levels of inflammation in the body accompany the presence of arthritis of any type. This is why fish oil is such a great supplement for anybody suffering from arthritis – even if taking drugs. Fish oil supplements are a very safe remedy which have no deleterious effects on any health conditions or any drugs being taken. Fish oil is for any arthritis symptom.

But do be sure to take enough fish oil supplements every day. A good dosage is to take 1500 mg daily of EPA combined with DHA.

In other words, look at the label of your fish oil and add up the total milligrams of these two important fish oils. The total needs to come to around 1500 mg daily.

This may equate to 6 capsules of a typical fish oil supplement. If it is a weak supplement you will need many more! So make sure you buy a Fish Oil Supplement with high potency.

Fish oil is a great anti-inflammatory and so is brilliant for all arthritis sufferers. Just make sure you take enough.

Fish oils and fish oil supplements have been proven to improve brain function and treat depression. So if fish oil can help alleviate depression, there’s every reason to believe that it can do the same for post-partum depression. Post-partum depression affects 10 to 12% of women within the first month after childbirth. Without the proper diagnosis and treatment, post-partum depression could last for years or it could progress to post-partum psychosis.

Post-partum depression not only affects the mother, but it also negatively affects the child. Mothers with extreme post-partum depression often have difficulty forming healthy emotional attachment to their children. This can adversely affect their mental, emotional and social development. There’s also the risk that these children may suffer abuse and neglect at the hands of their mothers.

It is widely believed that post-partum depression is due to the sharp drop in the womans hormone levels after giving birth. But there’s a theory that states that post-partum depression may be related to DHA deficiency the mother experiences after birth. A mother transfers most of her body’s stores of the omega 3 oil DHA to her baby to support optimal brain development. If the mother doesn’t take enough omega 3 fatty acids during pregnancy, she could experience DHA deficiency after giving birth. Studies have shown that a woman’s DHA levels after birth is directly related to the severity of her post-partum depression.

Taking fish oils and omega 3 fish oil supplements is the safer and the lasting alternative to antidepressant drugs. Antidepressants can have side effects that can be passed on to breast milk. And long term use of antidepressants can have detrimental health effects. Fish oils, on the other hand, are safe for pregnant and lactating mothers. Fish oil supplements have few if any side effects and are completely safe even with prolonged use.

Also by taking fish oils and eating fish during pregnancy, a woman builds up her stores of omega 3 fatty acids. Intake of mercury, pesticides and other harmful substances can be avoided by taking high quality fish oil pills or capsules and avoiding fish like shark and swordfish which store contaminants in their muscles.

Taking fish oil pills or supplements after birth can help treat the DHA deficiency and provide the mother with extra DHA for breast milk.

The main benefit of fish oil is that it reduces inflammation. And inflammation is linked to most degenerative diseases – cancer., heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes.

An adult needs from 1-2 grammes of EPA plus DHA daily. This is not 1-2 grammes of fish oil; but 1-2 grammes of EPA + DHA. To work out how much DHA. and EPA is in your omega 3 oil you need to read the label. You might need 6-7 capsules a day of fish oil to achieve this intake.

This amount of EPA and DHA has the best anti-inflammatory effect. It should be taken daily – as should a top quality multi-vitamin/mineral supplement.

Take your fish oil daily, every day. It is possible to get it delivered to you monthly so you never run out.

The best vegetarian source is linseed oil (flax seed oil) although the omega 3 oils in this supplement are not as easily available as those in fish oil.

Here is an article on omega 3 fatty acid which gives you more background information.

Oily fish is a great way to get fish oil. This includes salmon, sardines, trout, herring and whitebait. However, it is hard to get enough this way so supplementation is required.

The study, carried out recommends taking 500mg of fish oil daily for everyone; and 1000mg if there is a pre-existing heart condition.

I would recommend taking more than this – more like 1000-20000mg of EPA+DHA, which will probably equate to about 6000-7000mg of fish oil.
