A recent study shows that the £60million a year ($85million) that Britons spend on fish oil capsules is money well spent – in helping avoid Alzheimer’s disease.

Anybody in the natural healthcare profession is able to tell you that supplementing your diet with fish oil capsules, plus eating oily fish up to 3 times a week along with ample vegetables and fruit, is a good way to stay healthy. The recent study shows that such a diet stops your brain from shrinking as you age. A reduction in volume of the brain is an inevitable part of ageing, but the more we can reduce this, the more we can ward off dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

A large proportion of the brain is omega-3 fatty acids, the type found in fish oil, so it should be no surprise that supplementing omega-3 fats helps maintain bulk of the brain.

About 750,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia. And this figure is set to double by 2050.

As well as helping dementia, omega-3 fats reduce the chances of developing blood clots and have a beneficial effect on cancer cells.

In time, treatments for Alzheimer’s will be developed. Until then, keep taking the fish oil!

Amyloid Structure (Wikipedia)

In Alzheimer’s Disease and several other conditions the formation of amyloid fibrils has long been suspected to cause the disease, in the case of Alzheimer’s, by affecting the brain. However, this received knowledge is now being questioned.

The fibrils have always been thought be there for good, once formed. On the contrary, however, they have been found to change over time, meaning they can be manipulated – changed and reduced.

How exactly this will be used in practice is uncertain right now.  But as more information is gained, it seems sure that treatments will be found for Alzheimer’s – and other diseases involving amyloid fibrils – which will make it treatable, and eventually – most likely – curable.

Britain will have more than a million dementia patients within a decade, warn experts. This will be so if dementia – including Alzheimer’s disease – sufferers continue to grow at the current rate.

This would mean that nearly 1 in 60 would be affected.

The cost of treating a dementia patient is very high placing an increasing burden on the NHS. Treatment for a dementia patient is estimated at over £25,000 ($40,000) a year, five times that of treating a cancer patient.

Some early developments in treating dementia with stem cells have been reported recently. These developments could certainly be sped up if the money could be found to do so.

But the cash-strapped government will be hard to persuade to increase spending more on this important research – especially when their timescale revolves so much around the date of the next election – that is, a 5-year time span.

Scientists have reported making a good step progress towards treating Alzheimer’s Disease by using stem cells. The key has been the ability to use stem cells – derived from skin to create of  the “basal forebrain cholinergic” cells which are some of the main ones lost Alzheimer’s.

The discovery of how to create this type of cells means that scientists can work now to find out how to stop these cells being killed by Alzheimer’s Disease – which is an early symptom of the disease.

Though this does not necessarily mean a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease is just around the corner, without a supply of these cells to work on, any thought of a future cure was impossible.

Alzheimer’s will be curable one day: and this is a good step in that direction.

UK universities are making great advances in using stem cells to repair damaged bone and cartilage. The UK National Stem Cell Research Conference heard about some of these.

One programme, lead by Richard Oreffo at Southampton University, uses a patient’s own stem cells to repair damaged bone. The stem cells, derived from their bone marrow, is used to make a mixture which, when reintroduced, will fill gaps created by accidents or tumour removal.

Four patients have received this therapy so far, with positive results from early assessments.

Guiding Stem Cells with Magnetic Nanoparticles

Professor Alicia El Haj of Keele University is leading more futuristic research to develop a method to attach magnetized nanoparticles to stem cells. The magnetization then enables the stem cells to be moved around the body to precise locations – without an operation.

This makes some types of therapy much more effective than just injecting the stem cells. This therapy will have a huge range of applications – wherever tissue repair is needed in specific parts of the body.

This method has been proven on rodents and human trials will be started in due course.

Researchers at the University of Sheffield have discovered how to turn stem cells into the key cells governing hearing – the sensory hair cells and the auditory neurons.

Until now, once these cells were damaged, diminishing hearing, there was no cure.

This fantastic research has been showcased at the UK National Stem Cell Network conference, which took place in Oxford, UK, on Monday April 6th.

Lead researcher Dr Marcelo Rivolta said:

“The potential of stem cells is very exciting… This should facilitate the development of a stem cell treatment for deafness.”

Although being able to cure deafness is some years away; but this is another area in which we can see that stem cells will – for some sufferers within a few years -  reverse a condition which, up to now, has seemed hopeless.

Unlimited O-rhesus negative blood will allow the NHS to avoid a logistical nightmare – maintaining stores of the eight different types of human blood. O-rhesus negative is good for everyone.

It also means that the chance of giving the wrong type of blood to patient – which could be fatal – will be zero.

A Miracle of Science

The world of medicine will be massively improved by having an unlimited, safe source of transfusable blood.

Thanks to embryonic stem cell research this miracle is expected to start to become a reality in 3-4 years.

Scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine have clarified the role of an enzyme, called lisyl oxidase (LOX) in the role of cancer.

Most people who die of cancer die from metastasis – the spreading of cancer from its original site. This metastasis is enabled by the original tumour producing LOX, which find distant sites and prepares them for invasion by the spreading cancer. Different types of tumour produce differing amounts of LOX – coinciding with how aggressive they are. For example, prostate cancer is generally quite un-aggressive and does not spread easily; so it, presumably, produces little LOX.

In health, LOX strengthens our connective tissue – the important tissue which ‘fills in the gaps’ between important organs and body structures. However, it is produced in quantity by many cancer tumours when they exceed a certain size.

How This Will Stop Cancer Spreading

As the mechanism is better understood, methods will be found of inhibiting the LOX production of a tumour and making the tumour’s spread much less likely.

This will not necessarily help catch cancers which have already spread when they are discovered; but, now its mechanism is better understood,  influencing LOX will be a potent weapon in the fight against cancer.

At last, embryonic stem cell research will now get federal funding thanks to President Obama’s reversal of Bush’s ridiculous ban. This has put embryonic stem cell research back 5 years – and we are talking here about cures for various cancers and heart disease. Bush has definitely cost lives, many lives.

The correct course was, if he was concerned about stem cell ethics, to permit federal funding, but set parameters. That is what is going to happen now – five years later. Basically, Bush gave in to the Christian lobby. Even now, the Pope opposes Obama’s decision.

Anyway, the research can now proceed, accelerated by the US’s involvement.

UK Stem Cell Lead

The UK are currently at the forefront of stem cell research but this won’t last long with America in the game.

We will see fantastic health treatment gains – for cancer, heart disease, and perhaps Alzheimer’s – in 10-20 years thanks to the advances made possible by embryonic stem cell research. Already a US firm has started searching for human candidates for the first trial of stem cell therapy for those paralysed by severe spinal injury – made possible by embryonic stem cell research.
